Landlocked seemed to be a bit of a murky one on first release, the identities of those involved initially concealed, an approach that actually does add some value to a type of music that works best hidden in the shadows or beyond a veil. Still, who makes this music when it's dedicated to the memory of Stephen Lawrence and is drawing on such wells of black creativity (dub AND techno) absolutely matters,, so to subsequently learn of the involvement of Trevor Matthison and Edward George, founders of the Black Audio Film Collective (which we’ve talked about in the past a few times here at WOE), as well as Anna Piva seems entirely fitting. For Chain Reaction to have stretched their reach to the UK to source music that was so tied to their specific locale speaks loudly for just how incredible Landlocked is. Deep, murky, sonorous dub techno of a particularly grainy decay that morphs and re-forms around debased Wackies reanimations, Jungle mutations and ambient-futurist soundscapes that could have slid straight off the USCSS Nostromo, typical of the label in some ways but also about as good as this stuff can get. Very much a Chain Reaction release, and yet, somehow, also beholden to the lens of its very own (un)fair isle, too (that’ll be what they mean by ‘landlocked’, I’d suppose). Dub techno, then, but also a good deal more, a radical gesture of Black Futurism and sonic invention that still sounds unimpeachable now.
