In operation at the turn of the century and closely allied with the 555 Recordings label based in Leeds, Halkyn, alongside Empress and Hood, comprised a kind of counterpoint scene to what was happening in Bristol at the same time, joining the ends of post-rock, lo-fi, slowcore, folk and electronica into their own gently inventive, hyper-sensitive song. As in Empress, Coyle mostly works in miniature and favours minimalism, very few of these 21(!) recordings passing the two minute mark and adorned with little more than guitar, voice, a little piano and strings, and the occasional electronic flourish. And yet, the emotional impact is undeniably significant, conveying of an intimate, unabashedly melancholic air that it remains hard to not be moved by. Coyle's voice is an especially fragile thing, and you get with it the sense that perhaps these recordings were meant for few ears beyond their creator's own, a soundtrack only to their own private inner world, songs for the sake of songs. Which until now, is pretty much what they were. Some 25 years on, they sound unexpectedly germane - sounds so true often have that effect.

FFO: Empress, Movietone, Hydroplane, Hood
