Felicity J Lord member Gustav Kemps steps out under his own name for a collection of minimalist guitar miniatures that make little-to-no connection to his parent band and present something altogether more sincere and beguiling. As much as I enjoyed that FJL debut LP, it certainly came packed with a hefty dose of snark, an exercise in sonic pranksterism straight ouf of the Dean Blunt Book of Pisstaking. Lonesome For A Storm is by contrast a very private, insular-sounding arrangement, 15 short-form sketches consisting almost entirely of sparse guitar figures and processed overlays, referencing of Loren Connors, the gentle post-rock minimalism of Empress, and a scaled-back early Jules Reidy (sans the auto-tune). It's release on Motion Ward is intriguing given their recening issuing of the Cancer House debut, an inner-looking interpolation of slowcore that feels spiritually alligned to Lonesome For A Storm, and with it, feels like another quiet victory for a label on a bit of a streak right now.
