HUGE Severed Heads feel on this Musique Plastique compilation of the late 80s Candian outfit, skirting its way through proto-electronic experimentations, dub, EBM, ambient, noise... you name it, they're having a go at it. As their name might suggest, it's all underscored with a vaguely political/Foucauldian agenda, critiquing & satirising geopolitics, power structures, gender inequality. All that bad stuff. But there's a lightness of touch, too, their freewheeling through genre and ideas consistently fluid and well-realised, never once letting the message override the music. The first track is called 'Melting Pot', a term I'd never use to describe anything, but you know, they do mix it up pretty well... Also worth a look if you dug that Short-Term Memory reissue we were shouting about a few weeks back. Another top archival project from Musique Plastique.
