Gold VinylSecond installment in Group Listening's series of homespun reworkings of 'classics' (if only the world were fairer). First time out they were taking on Arthur Russell, Brian Eno, Robert Wyatt et al, and here they turn their attentions to Beverly Glenn Copeland, Neu, Big Star, Syrinx and more. It is, in theory, a covers record, though in application feels a little more loving and joyous than such an understanding might suggest. The home-recorded aspect is a crucial contributor to how these re-interpretations land. Pretty and delicate, yes, but also unfussy and convivial, too, two musicians lovingly and reflexively sharing a private understanding now public. In a very simple but perfect way, Selected Works is an expression of fandom, and through it, identity: this is who we are and what we love. There is no room for cynicism here, nor 'aesthetic', either: just the room and the people within it.
