Glands of External Secretion, the strung out and shining collective work of Barbara Manning and Seymour Glass, never really stop, but Neck Pillow probably qualifies as their first 'proper' release since 2011. Proper, that is, because it's on record and you can buy it in a shop... Did i get that right? When you make music as singularly odd and frequently as the pair do, such classifications are likely irrelevant. Nonetheless, the release of Neck Pillow is at least an opportunity to take a closer look at what's being attempted here and, well, good luck working it out. How do you make sense of the senseless? Cut n paste anti-rock abstraction, refraction and fragmentation that rejects just about anything you might consider convention. Manning and Glass have been at this since 1995 and at this stage they seem psychically aligned in their misalignment. Scatalogical musings, psychedelic conflict, anti-pop subversion, left brain vs right brain confusion, and, mostly, the sense of just doing what the hell one pleases, like a miniaturised compression of The Shadow Ring, The Residents, Idea Fire Company and Ashtray Navigations. In a way this feels like a hangover from the CDr underground of the 90s, where desire seemed to shadow need - do it cos you can, do it cos you want to, do it for no reason at all. Kind of a perfect Siltbreeze record to be honest. "It's all fun and games until someone shits her pants" they say right at the end and they're not wrong you know.
