First released as a somewhat mysterious tape in 2019, this first time vinyl pressing does little to clear the fog that surrounds Gewissen - it's the debut release on Dorothea Riga Verlag (whatever that is) and therefore arrives free of context, the track titles are either in German or ambiguous portmanteaus, and the press release is so inscrutable it could have been published by Fitzcarraldo. Colour me interested. The distributor is good enough to point us in the direction of Werkbund, the shadowy German minimal electronics project from the early 90s, and it's about as close as i can get to a comparison, both in terms of sound and presentation, while adding a little murky mist to Civistijavel's icy snowfield electronics might land you somewhere in the same ballpark. Elsewhere, i hear aspects of the texture-driven inner worlds of early Actress, Shackleton and Seefeel's Succour slowed to a muddy trudge, two feet sunken in the digital swamp. Whatever/whoever it is, the Gewissen world is an eerie and baffling one to inhabit. Edition of hardly anything - aka if you see it, buy it.
