Two classic deep house grails kissed with that eternal DJ Sprinkles magic finally brought back towards the light thanks to Scissors & Thread. Both date from roughly the same time - 2013 and 2014 respectively - though come from different sources: the former from Frank Harris’ Minutes of Sleep LP, the latter from Frank and Tony’s You Go Girl albm, but what unites them is Sprinkle’s unmatchable ability to bring joy and emotional depth to everything they touch. The low-in-the-mix vocal hook and trumpet line on ‘You Can Always Leave’ are near-timeless, but it’s the synth shimmers that keep the whole thing alive and propelled, that kind of feeling where 12 minutes could happily extend forever. ‘Companion’ on the flip is no less inspired, and somehow even deeper, a proper dancing with tears in your eyes call to prayer capped with an ambient coda that’s pure Sprinkles humanity. Honestly about as good as you can get, true genius from the don, who’s even good enough to supply new remasters of both. The kind of music that feels like a borderline act of philanthropy. Do not rest on.
