Both Bristol and Quade have some bearing on what Connolly explores on Porcelain, making reference to both the city’s Planet Records heritage and the quiet-is-the-new-loud inverted dynamic of his parent band. Porcelain is a very pretty and delicate sounding record (that’ll be where the album title comes in), a slip-of-the-wind, piano-in-the-backroom-while-the-whole-house-sleeps meditation that actually also disguises some smart little production flourishes and subtle sonic inventions. Patience and a gentle touch are the defining tricks here. The keys of that piano underpin the whole thing, as arcing strings and the crackles of field recordings (voices and otherwise) move in and out of the stereofield, envisaging a kind of ambient-folk music that draws lines between the homely slowcore post-rock minimalism of Empress and Movietone, and the blissed-out decay of The Caretaker (see ‘Prove Fruitful’ especially). A little churlish to pull apart a work so purposefully constructed as one, though there is special attention reserved for album centre piece, ‘Hagstone Lullaby, a slow-building but crushingly emotive quixotic folk song underscored with a barely perceptible female vocal that would sound entirely at home on Hana Stretton’s latest and might just have you dabbing the tears from your eyes.
