Brilliantly magnetic debut LP of hauntalogical odd-pop from shadowy collective Ferries, a group we know nothing about and who we're told wish to remain anonymous. Fair enough and chance would be a fine thing etc etc. Whoever is behind this, Eye Flutter certainly doesn't rely on the cult of personality to stand out, it's ten tracks an instantly infectious confluence of experimental kraut-pop confection, glam strut and early Gary Numan styled synthpop allure. With no other biological information to go on, we can at least make some sense of the involvement of Bergpolder, the very same label that brought us the rotted sonic melange of Goldblum and the off-kilter pop savvy of Lewsberg, both of whom Ferries would play perfectly alongside without sounding anything alike. It's a sensibility thing. And speaking of which, it's interesting Eye Flutter should show up the same week as the new LP from Cuneiform Tabs, functioning as the more extroverted sibling to Age's introspective inner-gazing tendencies and seemingly leaning into the same influences (Panda Bear, Atlas Sound, Can) but processing them into slightly more technicolour shapes. It's remarkable, really, that a record so dripping in character should wish to be uncredited, though it does force you to assess it on its merits alone, something of which it possesses many. Few records this year have emerged out of nowhere with such confidence and sense of self. The mystery deepens, the appeal even more so...Edition of 150. Don't sleep on this one.
