The trio of Nicolas Kauffmann, Jesper Hedegård and Sara Czerny have been in operation since the turn of the century, and are in possession of a formidable catalogue of outre sounds that navigate the frayed intersections of psych, drone, krautrock, noise and folk in ways that'll be familiar to anyone versed in the CD-r underground of the late '90s\/early '00s. Though geographically disparate, the group are certainly psychically aligned with the contemporaneous activity of US counterparts Charalambides, The Tower Recordings and Fursaxa, and that strung-out moment in American underground music that was variously referred to as either New Weird America or freak\/avant folk, but was in actual fact much broader and more exploratory than that slightly patronising nomenclature might suggest. Most of these recordings were completed in and around various unconventional spaces in Copenhagen, though it's just as revealing of their mindset that a live track from a performance in New York with the aforementioned Fursaxa is also included. It's an inevitably lo-fi selection, the product of home studio limitations and textural experimentation, though there's also a warming communal hum throughout that just as much stresses the titular family as it does the underground. Reference to their peers is useful in understanding their approach, but Family Underground also clearly cast their own shadow of influence, evidence of their no-wave informed dissonance and psychic distortions clear to see in the work of, say, Neutral and Amateur Hour.
