Right now, you can’t escape it. A clearly highly motivated collaborator and networker, the Berlin (I think - it’s hard to firmly locate someone so actively mobile) singer has been highly present in 2026, featuring on a range of labels, bills, festival line ups, NTS shows and so forth. She now finds a new, quite possibly temporary but certainly suitable, home in Stroom, working in tandem with Marija Rasa, the Brussels-based producer otherwise known as Emer who you’ll know for her Fog LP on Short Span. On face value, you’d be forgiven for reading this as an expert guide to ticking the appropriate boxes, catnip for those who hang on the word of the Boomkat Friday mail out (no shade, but, y’know…). While You \u0026amp; Me will most certainly appeal to that audience, don’t let that colour your judgment of a record in which there’s much to appreciate, most notably Uma’s sheer force of personality, her voice a sensual, charisma-laden and elastic weapon she wields with great confidence, that when allied with Rasa’s production results in a shapeshifting, aqueous remoulding of future RnB tropes, leftfield electronics and after-hours ambience. The range of influences is likely quite broad, split somewhere between Theo Parrish, the contemporary pop transgressions of Kelela and the subversive instincts of labelmate, Voice Actor. This is a record very much of the moment, and one caught in unique place - born of the underground, but in display of ambitions way beyond that.
