Early Music is a name that’s been connected to Collin for over ten years, first as an album, then as a label. The shift to its usage as a performer name is deceptive since it doesn’t really precipitate any other change in Collin’s approach - in some respects, you might even consider Works as a companion piece to Bridge Variations in everything but name. Not only is Collin using the same instrumentation - the keyed fiddle - but there’s also a similar intersection with environment. BV, as it’s title would suggest, was recorded under various bridges across Stockholm and its sound shaped by the bleed of non-diegetic sound (rain, cars, the wind et al). Similarly, Works is underscored by the intrusion of noise from adjacent construction work, what Discreet in turn describes as a ‘dialogue’. It’s an interesting way of understanding the aesthetic choice, and what it communicates about the elemental aspect of Collin’s practice, that long-held sense that this music has long been there waiting on the wind, pulled from the same ether that plays host to the surrounding city and the sounds alive within it. Works is a dialogue yes, but also a vessel and a redirection, both ambient and active sound in symbiosis.
