Bliss Archive re-appear with this debut outing from plunderphonics maestro, DJ Brittle. Now there's a word we've not heard for a while. And what does such a concept mean in the age of AI when all new sound is a intuited reassemblage of the past? I'm not sure what a machine would make of the connections bridged and aligned by Brittle's self-named Aleatoric Sampling System, a process that by its very nature relies on chance, where error is a compositional prerogative. How does one get from A to B when there's apparently no template to follow? And yet, as with improv, any notion of chance in music does have some element of the pre-supposed, always some kind of conscious thread to trace...And so where do those two competing ideas get us? In this instance, the guiding hand might be Bristol itself, and what Brittle is doing could be understood as a chance arrangement of the ghosts of that city, sub-bass, dub and cinematic crackle merging into one haunted collage, sort of like a more gltiched version of Romance or Lauten der Seele. Is this a rebirth of the author, perhaps? If there is a story being told here, it's one of living, fluid culture without linear arc. A very human experience at its core. Sounds like a perfect riposte to orthodox tyranny of ChatGPT.
