Between Oceans sees Mountain Movers' Dan Greene pair with David Shapiro (of Headroom, Nagual, countless others...) for a wonderfully autumnal and bucolic set of mostly gentle psych folk meditations. There's a real early noughties avant-folk touch to much of this, recalling in part those still-great early Devendra Banhart recordings for Young God - perhaps it's the recorded-to-an-answer-phone ambience that does it? I was also unexpectedly reminded of Bradford Cox's 4track Atlas Sound work which he used to release in large batches via his blog, not least because Greene's voice is remarkably similar in tone, but also because of the same ghostly mystery that seems to haunt them both. Shapiro's job appears to be colouring in the background with various drones and textures, some subtle, some more abrasive and narcotic. It's a thrilling contrast, mainly cos it highlights Greene's penchant for melody amidst the noise. Edition of 75
