It's that name again... For something like the fourth time in the past five months i'm writing about a record featuring Valentina Magaletti, who appears here alongside fellow percussionist João Pais Filipe and producer Leon Marks for a six song sojourn on Trilogy Tapes. Luxury Variations is actually Magaletti and Felipe's second collaboration as CZN, though is somewhat different in shape to their longform debut from 2018. These six tracks are positively miniature by comparison, densely packed polyrhythmic dubwise excursions that vibrate in thrall to the pair's preternatural virtuosity. As you'd expect from Magaletti, both the skills and ideas on display are mesmerising, always explorative, immersive and free of cliche. We've listened to a lot of her records down the years, and rarely does she seem to repeat herself, but conversely always sound like nothing but herself. Force of nature business, and the marriage with Filipe and Marks allows her to reach the outer edges of the otherworld dub territory we've previously enjoyed through Holy Tongue and Due Matte. Another heavy hitter. Keep it coming.
