That we've managed to nab a few stray copies of what I think might be a very limited second run is indicative of the private universe mystique that Bush's output typically inhabits - the chosen format, like the music itself, tends to exist in some kind of hard-to-place shadow world which does its best to keep you guessing. Bush is known for assuming a few different forms, whether solo or in partnership, and his combination here with Auman seems to have brought out an additional dimension to his writing, one part downer folk song, one part concrète distortions and eruptions, one part drone-primitive, and one part some other kind of implacable alchemy. The pair employ a range of strings, keys, electronic manipulations and post-production tricks in distinctly unconventional ways, sometimes reminding me of that late 90s intersection between post-rock and IDM, sometimes embracing the lo-fi home-recorded experimentation of early Hood, Crescent or Arvocar, sometimes leaning into the type of quixotic musings you might connect with Durutti Column, Flaming Tunes or Deux Filles. Unlike with a lot of those acts, the focus here is less upon 'songs', so to speak, as it is texture, atmosphere and, well, experience. The result is a lengthy set of tracks that makes little concession to audience expectation and delves deep into its own haunted sound world in a way that requires unbroken immersive listening.
