It's 3 and 0 for Zaius Tapes. Following those vital reissues of Negative Reaction and the Buntingford compilation, they hit a hattrick with this repress of Camp One's only album, the intriguingly titled Revengeful Is The Mask of Darkness first released in 1981 on the band's own imprint. Information on this lot appears to be a little thin on the ground (don't we just love it that way), though from what i can deduce they seem to be a British four-piece birthed from the DIY energy of punk and coalescing around the same febrile eccentricities that characterised L. Voag, Mark Perry, Milk From Cheltenham and, inevtiably, The Homosexuals. The association the latter had with Recommended Records is a neat way of understanding what Camp One were up to, an art-rocking (almost Can-like?), proggy bastardisation of post-punk autodidactism, kinda like if Television's Little Johnny Jewel slummed it with the Warren Street Mafia in the heart of squatted London. Fans of Hamster and Cordelia might do well to check in here, a similarly opined world of artful and stubbornly singular self-determination. Beautiful freaks...
