The same keen brains responsible for 2025's beautiful and haunting 'plastic magic box' tape on AST.

While there are still figurative nods to Basinski in SbK, this release sees Blake and Frankie adding new techniques and, occasionally, minimal percussion to their already fine-tuned ambient-songcraft. SbK represents a slight stylistic shift into almost-IDM modes at times, but still retains the subtle, aching affect of the tape-work on 'plastic magic box'. There is a deft patience in these pieces and I have listened to them so much by now that they feel part of my DNA. There is an unspoken, almost telepathic communication between the duo, born from long, unfurling jams and the intimacy of time spent with each other.

brm & nuwa, individually and together, are two of my favourite current musicians. Maybe it is that they live locally, so I get to see them conjure the magic of their various projects live. Or that they are such sweet people, who I've gotten to know personally since meeting them a few years ago. Regardless, I believe that there is something inherently vital in this music, even more so when considered that this is made by early 20-somethings in what is essentially a big town (Nipaluna/Hobart). This is as good as any ambient music on NTS, any experimental project in a 'big city' and this is only one of the numerous projects that brm and nuwa turn their attention to.

brm & nuwa's music comes from a genuine need to make something weird, to communicate isolation as a means of connection.

Hopefully it connects with some ears out there, as it has with me.
