Arriving early November
7"
One of the more sought after releases in the IDDB 7" series is given another run via Quirlschlängle, the label operated by Brannten Schnure's Christian Schoppik. BS have been given a good deal of airtime round these parts and for good reason, and the punchily titled Ei, Wir Tun Dir Nichts Zuleide!, a line taken from German folk song 'Summ Summ Summ', is as beguiling as we've come to expect from the duo, a haunted wash of palimpsestic sampling, ghostbox ethereality and sing-song vocals that dances a fine line between child-like innocence and portentous dread. More than once have I thought of this music in relation to Haneke's White Ribbon...What's especially notable here is how adaptable their approach is to the short-form as it is the long. That's what happens when you've full command of an aesthetic - the idea is communicated in an instant and really, it takes less than a second to recognise who this is. Because of that, it's also perhaps the best entry in the IDDB catalogue, a perfect realisation of what that series was conceived to do: grand ideas expressed in succinct ways. And whether large or small, the Brannten Schnure vision remains totemic.
