This is the first Blod album to be recorded in a studio since 2018, though I'm not sure it matters all that much to the overall presentation - this ain't exactly a Rick Rubin production. What's more notable is that it's entirely instrumental and has been conceived as a soundtrack to a film that does not yet exist (and who knows, probably never will) about youth encountering early adulthood on a Friday night out. The coming of age narrative has proven a consistently a compelling one, and these songs sure do bounce along with an uncanny nostalgic tweeness that feels more inline with off-centre indiepop than it does Blod's usual interest in trad. folk. The press release cites all sorts of obscure influences, both Swedish and Italian, which might be entirely accurate, but since I don't know who they are, I, instead, hear more of the likes of Tori Kudo, Yumbo, Maher Shalal Hash Baz, and perhaps even Belle and Sebastian's Storytelling soundtrack (strangely, I think Blod would would great in a Todd Solondz film).
