Aguirre partners with Bruit Disques for this unexpectedly melodic debut LP of sideways spun art-blasted indie rock by Brussels outfit Another Dancer. A lot of what is happened here plays against type - rarely, if ever, do Aguirre go in for this kind of alterna-pop sound, and it's the kind of noise we're more used to hearing from Portland or Gothenburg in the early part of this century than we do mainland Europe right now. If I was pushed for a direct comparison, I might lean most towards an act like Architecture in Helsinki, another group who traded smartly in male-female counter-vocals, quixotic melodicism that walks a fine line between ebullience and melancholy, and an essential wonkiness that spins the listeners understanding of indiepop slightly off-centre. The press release states 80/90s DIY aesthetics as the main influence, but this certainly feels a little more up-to-date than that, the kind of sound you get when you attempt to process decades of listening into new shapes and forms. Post-indie indie that's happy to either make up its own rules or ignore them altogether. As first albums go, it's a great attitude to start with.
