Ninth studio album for the great Anne Gillis, once again committing to her very particular style of automatic writing-styled collaged electronics and noise abstraction. Gillis states that her work remains emotional and instinctual rather than cerebral, an intriguing assertion within the sound-design field where much of the output appears to be concept-led and pre-defined. The results on Evry], as with a great deal of her previous output, are often visceral and hard to place, favouring cut-ups, distortions and unusual juxtapositions, her voice intersecting with both harsh white noise manipulations and unexpected moments of crystalline levity. Gillis' work also presents as distinctly female in what is an often male-dominated arena, and in that manner shares some comparison with long-time noise aficionado Phew, solo Cosey or Moniek Darge. Nonetheless, Gillis remains a distinct, disorienting, and often disquieting voice constantly in adventure of off-piste terrain, not so much unafraid to marry the abrasive with the vulnerable as suggest they might in some ways be inextricably connected. Another fearless outing for an only fearless artist.
