Double LP
Second album in less than six months from Copenhagen producer Picture, and once again venturing deep into hypnotic dub techno territory ala Shinichi Atobe, Burger/Ink, Loidis++ Chain Reaction has held quite an influence over electronic music that past five years or so, and as a point of reference was perhaps risking becoming a little predictable, but Picture - much like his label Short Span as a whole - is adept enough with his choices to bring something fresh to the table. Dub techno tends towards the fluid and free-form, which obviously has its charms but in lesser hands can become either generic or somewhat anonymous. By contrast, Uuuuuuuu is shaped by a sense of urgency, supremely locked-in even if when its surrounding textures are possessed of that trademark sub-aquatic feel. The near-psychedelic synth vapourwaves that underscore ‘Ziiiiiiiii’ and the pulsing bass-line of ‘Peeeeeee 2’ make gestures towards an immersive deep house influence, and in turn help evolve the current Rhythm & Sound/Chain Reaction fascination into less explored terrain. Short Span has contributed a lot of notable work in its short existence. Good argument to suggest Uuuuuuuu might just be its best outing to date.
