Peak Oil's MVPs follow 2023 breakout Signs with a second LP of dub-fused ambient techno romanticism that markedly widens their emotional range. The once Chicago now New York-based trio have expanded their ranks with the inclusion of guest features by both Lorraine James and Angelina Nonaj, and with it add something a little overtly expressive to a sound that was previously more impressionistic than directive. Now they're really shooting for the heart. Comparisons to the equally pivotal second album by Huerco S. and PAN's scene-unifying Mono No Aware compilation feel well earned, though I think Peak Oil's connections to Kranky tell part of the story, too. There's a dreamy, trip-hop adjacent quality to these recordings that feels connectible to the midnight-dwelling world of a band like Bowery Electric, which in itself also makes sense of Purelink's displacement to New York. The songs aren't quite so linear, but they exist in a similar emotional realm, held buoyant in the amber of the night, adding a little heart and soul to the sometimes blanked-out zones of ambient composition. Which, in the end, makes Faith standout as a very human record in a busy field..
