Kim Gordon's debut solo album in 2019? It's hard to believe it's taken this long. It's hard to understand where the time goes. And in a lot of ways, No Home Record suggests time hasn't gone anywhere at all. The mention of AirBnb aside, No Home Record doesn't belong to 2019, could almost be from anytime in the last 30 years. The opening industrial KO of 'Sketch Artist' sets the tone - bristling but controlled, and burning everything to the ground with a laser eye. The rest of the record is built from those ashes, equal parts brains, fury and sex. Which is to say this is Kim Gordon as classic Kim Gordon, Kim Gordon as the sharpest heel and the most divine force, Kim Gordon as you'd imagine her and will always remember her. The mythos of Sonic Youth dictates that they were able to change direction and continue to sound like no-one else. Well, Kim Gordon's moved on and sounds as timlessly perfect as ever. Stars don't stand still in the night sky, that's just the way we see them.I didn't expect No Home Record to be this good.I'm the idiot.
