A new EXEK record frequently proves a crucial event, and so it once again comes to pass with this latest effort, their first for DFA, and, really quite impressively, seventh overall (not many bands are making that far these days). Prove The Mountains Move feels like a close ally of 2023's The Map and the Territory, a dub-infected exploration of post-punk invention defined by a distinct song craft and eccentric storytelling zeal. Band leader/singer, Albert Wolski, considers this a more 'epic' outing from the group, though I think that's always been in their DNA, weaving surrealist vistas around a rubbery rhythm section and the kind of knotty melodies that have a tendency to rattle around your head long after the needle has been lifted. Wolski's lyrics are of endless fascination, though the band here, also featuring YL Hooi, are supple and nuanced in sharply sophisticated ways that make a mockery of all ye other pretenders making a claim for their 'post-punk' credentials. EXEK have long carried that torch as well as anyone. On Prove The Mountains Move, it burns as fierce as ever. The further great news is that the band and DFA have furnished us with an accompanying mixtape that rounds out the world of the record, and for no extra cost, too. Edition of 50, when they're gone they're gone.
