A band who chose to call themselves The Toads and display a more than passing appreciation for Spoilt Victorian Child are always gonna go one of two ways. Since the Melbourne newcomers (they're but a single year old) number members of The Shifters amongst their ranks, we can be pretty sure which side of the good/shit divide they - ahem - Fall, which in a very crowded field is a small mercy in itself. So yes, the MES influence wails like a klaxon, but the spirit is good with this lot, smartly keeping in as much Hanley as they do any delusions to astute lyrical mordancy, and we also get a fair bit of that too. "Are we having fun yet?". Fuck knows tbqh, but i've felt worse and i'll feel even worse again at some point i'm sure. And as they're not making anymore Fall albums (unless you count House of All...), there's plenty of room on the broom for a type of songwriting that at this stage has every right to be considered a folk music - this belongs to the people now, Toads and all.
