Mildly narcotic and depressive metallic lullaby action from the lad from Heavy Metal, finding a nice little spot in the German post post-punk continuum - think the psych flecked cigarette-flicking attitude of The Cocoon and Exit Out in their more drug-fogged moments. The Velvets, of course, are the ground zero, but it moves off into some unexpected places that recall the Sturm und Drang of Antipodean miserablist Peter Jefferies and the existentialist explorations of his work as This Kind of Punishment. You mind also find some precedent in the Cindy Lee records, and even early Brian Jonestown. That's to say, this is the kind of thing not in short supply, but always compelling, always needed, always being made somewhere, anywhere. It's like a new kind of folk music in a lot of ways. When they finally burn this world to the ground, they'll still be a kid with a guitar and a four track making these kind of sounds. Eternal.
