With just the one LP and a single live performance to their name, Matt Blyele and Sterling Mackinnon's Cuneiform Tabs are undoubtedly a young band, but out the gate there already exists something markedly defined about the music the pair make together. Well, perhaps 'defined' is not quite the right term, the music too playful in form to establish any clear, established shape. Yet you recognise the voice in an instant. The four songs that comprise Homo Ludens are clear expressions of the idiom they've coined, blistered post-punk psych-outs, submerged indiepop melodicism and rabbithole digressions that speak to technicolour imaginations on compromised budgets, blasted and brazen and utterly itself. If I could Weird Science a band into existence, they'd sound much like Cuneiform Tabs.
