10"
First released as a lathe in an edition of 20 in 2019, Ultraääni have finally made available more easily accessible pressing of Oiro Pena's debut 10". Those with the original lathe will no doubt be annoyed, but for the rest of us we can finally enjoy what is a really engaging selection of flute-driven spiritual jazz which feels a lot older than its five years suggests. That is to say this is classic sounding action that could easily have its roots in late 60s Philadelphia as it does contemporary Scandinavia. There's just the four songs here - it is a 10" after all - and the real headlines belong to the opener and closer, supreme examples of spiritual transfiguration that reaches back to the greats as well as establishing some shared understanding with good people at Internatinal Anthem. Andre 3000 pulled his flute out this year to great acclaim. I wonder if this is what helped inspire him. One listen and you'd not bet against it.
