Now on our radar thanks to his involvement with the great Inner Cop Avoidance LP is prolific Danish experimental guitarist, Kristian Poulsen. And what a way to be introduced with not one but seven records, both solo and in collaboration, recorded over the past nine years. So where to start? If you've heard and enjoyed the woozy charm of Inner Cop Avoidance, then In- & Output might be your best point of entry, a chiming, circular meditation with genuine hypnotic quality, something like the transcendental metal string vibrations of Michael O'Shea. And on a similar note is the collab with Mathias Sæderup, also a member of ICA, which extends the quixotic notes of that record into especially Other purgatorial territory. On Layer we approach Jon Collin ground, but with a noticeably more metallic, gamelan influenced edge, while Double Neck Dobbeltnakke makes a lot of sense of Poulsen's connections with TRjj, very much time-dilated and spun out towards the dark corners of tomorrow. And pre-dating the solo record is his work with Spost, which charts some space between Faust-ian absurdity and the austere Scandi klang of Neutral, the unifying quality, as with everything Poulsen seems to touch, it's deeply hypnotic seductions. NOW BREATHE. A lot to take in here, but my it's worth it. Rich, probing, experimental sound in search of its own fourth world.
