Second 7" this week from Stoned to Death comes from Thor and Friends affiliate, Chris Cundy, a bass clarinet and saxophone player with some deep-running ties to the modern jazz avant garde. Jazz/improv isn't usually something that lends itself well to the 7" format - just as you're getting going, it's over and out - but Cundy does enough within these eleven+ minutes tracks to leave no-one dying wondering. Two solo, free-form modulations that gesture towards wildness without fully spiralling off out into the void - think the poised control and release of Joe McPhee's Cosmic Love, Evan Parker, or even a little of Anthony Braxton's For Alto. Free musics with no little heart and heft, made more striking by it's shortform composition. Edition of 250, all hand-numbered.
