Since its formation in 2016, the Standing On The Corner collective has spanned many genres and mediums, shape-shifting between soul, rap and jazz, to noise, spoken word and rock n’ roll, with Gio Escobar at the centre.
The band’s first two projects Standing On The Corner (2016) and Red Burns (2017) were critically lauded, deeply cherished underground gems, available inconsistently through traditional platforms – currently not at all – and file sharing sites, with physical media intentionally limited and obscured to keep within a community of those in the know (to date all physical has only been sold via the SotC website).
Following signing to XL the group dropped numerous unofficial tracks via their own platforms, hidden within micro-sites and zip-file downloads. In that time, they’ve shown up in various real world and recorded forms, from touring a traditional live show in North America with King Krule and festivals such as Pitchfork Chicago, to multi-disciplinary installations in New York (The Shed, MoMA PS1), London (Serpentine Pavilion), Paris (Bourse de Commerce), to producing records for Solange, Danny Brown, Earl Sweatshirt, MIKE and more. In 2020 the collective officially released Angel and G-E-T-O-U-T!! The Ghetto via their own Creative Mysteries Arts imprint.
For the last few years, the Standing On The Corner has been best known as a live entity, ranging from 2 to 24 members depending on its "formation" and spanned genres from ambient drone to orchestral jazz.
