The press release tells me that Montreal's Deb Edison has been making music as The Submissives since 2016, though i'll admit this is the first time we've crossed paths. Given her output has been limited to a few Bandcamp/cassette only albums, it's no surprise really, though this kind of Shaggs/Raincoats/Vital Idles channeling DIY self-determination is perfectly designed for certain corners of the shop. Drums fall down stairs, violins shriek, guitars tune and untune themselves at will, Edison atop them all at all times, cooing some kind of salacious confessional or witty aside. Might we have once labeled this 'antifolk'? Well, it was Jeffrey Lewis that claimed it's the ones who have cracked that the light shines through, and it's through her imperfections you see Edison glow. If you value technical virtuosity, perhaps keep walking, but those drawn towards outsider autodidacticism might wanna stop and take a closer look.
