Best of Year 2019
I've kept the below text, which I wrote and posted on here and our socials before David took his own life. It just goes to show how wrong you can be about some things. I wasn't wrong about the music though. RIP DCB. The songs are eternal.
It's a lazarus move! David Berman (he of Silver Jews fame ICYDK) returns from the wilderness with a new project in the form of Purple Mountains. The Washington Post feature that ran a week or two back suggests this might well be one of The Great Break Up Records. Up there with Here My Dear (but maybe less hateful - more self-hate). Seems like a lot of shit has gone down since we last heard from DB. Same as it ever was. Recorded with Woods as his backing band, the two lead singles they've leaked so far indicate we're back in the country new wave territory of 'Punks In The Beerlight'. A fine place to be. I never thought we'd see this day come. I'm glad he's back, as busted-up and brilliant as ever.
