Mystic 100's - On A Micro Diet

The band formerly known as Milk Music return as Mystic 100s, lifting their new moniker from the title of the last record they released under that first incarnation. The shift makes a lot of sense - Milk Music began as an SST recasting of Crazy Horse distilled to in the red riffing (and to no little acclaim), but ended up something much weirder instead, psychedelics seemingly having taken their natural course. On A Micro Diet (that diet almost certainly consisting of psilocybin) ventures further down that road, nine tracks of debased classic guitar heroics that's heard Arc as much as it has Weld, Dead-Heads too perhaps, but not the kind that have forgotten the meaning of The Great American Songbook. "Jerry Garcia is a dear, dear friend of mine" guitarist-vocalist Alex Coxen softly coos on the doo-wop country of Message From Lonnie, and there was probably no need for him to say. Old time Milk Music fans will find plenty to love here also, particularly on Windowpane and the title track, which propose a Blue Oyster Cult-Dead Moon union that you didn't know you needed until you're on your third straight listen through. And if you're of the belief that what the world needs is more guitar solos then i might just have the record for you. There's not been much public sighting of the band since 2013, and their reclusive outsider status shows, the music very out of sync - and better for it - than much else of what is currently deemed de rigeur. Good. Off-grid living on a micro diet to maximum effect.
