Vinyl or Cassette.
It's not all Latvian reggae and Himalayan folk song round here you know. Sometimes all you long for of a Friday afternoon is some perfectly conceived subversive pop music. And make no mistake, that is what Fat White Family are doing here, and maybe possibly perhaps always were.
The sound is a little cleaner this time around, less drug-fogged and scuzzed-out, shifting from their previous reliance on guitars to display a little more affinity with Throbbing Gristle and early Cabs, an influence they've always leant on visually but rarely embraced on record. Seems like that move to Sheffield has imparted some Steel City whomp. There's also cocaine disco era Leonard Cohen, Arthur Lyman exotica, Hot Chocolate, Wham B-sides and 70s glam Christmas songs. I even reckon that last single, 'Feels Good With the Money', could be the devil (or is it angel?) reimagination of 'Feed the World'. It's not 'weird', 'strange', 'odd' or whatever the more boring part of the music world would like you to think - it's simply what pop/rock (whatever!) music should sound like in 2019, 70+ years in the making. This is the kind of thing that happens when you listen to a lot of music and read some books and know your history and like to get a bit caned. And please please please will someone get me a song-length version of the speaking-in-tongues group chanting that makes up the last 30 seconds of 'When I Leave'?
Haters gonna hate. So what. Long may they continue to piss people off.
