This Grapefruit label has a hell of a stable. Not content to busy itself with reissues of some of the deeper cut Garbage and the Flowers and Peter Jefferies albums from way back (which we also now have back in stock btw), it’s also finding contemporary kindred spirits that channel that same sad and lonely sound. EFFM are a Gothenburg-based supergroup of sorts, who much like Jefferies with Xpressway, run their own label and have generally forged their own creative ecosystem that speaks wildly of the Nu Swedish Scene. Det Finns... was originally released by Scandi imprint Omlott, but music this magical and beguilingly elliptic deserves wider reach. These are brittle, soft-hearted laments that, like Kiwi Animal, create this sense of dramatic worlds in miniature . Life in a goldfish bowl heartbreak, amidst creaking organ sounds and scuffed guitar shuffles. And strangely there’s a strange commune like vibe to this that made me think of Amon Duul, in terms of spirit at least. As always with this stuff, I’ve no idea what they’re singing about, but it feels proper sad like and a perfect soundtrack for watching grey January rain through windows while something like A Woman Under the Influence plays in the background. Mega fucking romantic death material.
