Double LP
The Nu Manchester hype train rolls on with this latest production from Michael J Blood, a collaboration with newcomer Samizdat. Here, Nu Manchester sounds quite a lot like classic Detroit, namely Theo Parrish and Moodymann, a blend of deep house and jazz influences that offer a perfect framing for Samizdat's loverman vocal performances and songwriting, which itself might be broadly positioned in the 'post-Dean Blunt' category. It's also impossible to ignore the polemics of that title, swinging the overall presentation just that little bit further to the left, and with it probably offers as good a means as any for understanding the motivations and activities of the Manchester underground right now: defiant, DIY, NOT London. Tony Wilson would be proud.
