KYE affiliate Glorias Navales pairs with Lithuania-based musician Sholto Dobie for this debut collaboration of guitar-orientated improvised folk. Despite knowing KYE, i've otherwise no context for either Navales or Dobie's work, and arrive at Lo Escucho, Lo Pinto cold - the discovery is somewhat revelatory, and the means of its creation distinctly unique. Recorded unannounced in public spaces in Chile at the start of last year, it's unusual to hear such quiet and intuitive music performed amidst unsuspecting audiences, more unusual still for it to be documented in this manner. Circular, overlapping guitar figures form a spiralling, open-ended drone that's only interruption is either the conclusion of its players' impulses or the interjection of attendant crowd noise, the minutiae of everyday life intersecting with its artful trance. Though using different instrumentation and existing in a very different context, it reminded me in part of the Gerogerigegege's unsuspecting <decrescendo, where private, intimate expression meets the wider outside world. The result is evidence of the power quiet music can have when at its best, encouraging the listener closer, coaxing you into its orbit, drawing not demanding attention. Lo Escucho, Lo Pinto is certainly one to get lost in.
