Roy Montgomery - Rhymes of Chance

The third of four Roy Montgomery records this year, making a mockery of the alleged Great Vinyl Manufacturing Crisis of 2021 (actually is a legit problem tbf but that's another story). Like with the second contribution to the series, That Best Forgotten Work, Montgomery sings a fair bit once again, pushing that heavier than hell (near Michael Gira) baritone to the fore. Here, though, he's joined by vocalist Emma Johnston, and the counterpoint is particularly important, bringing a little light in, reminiscent of Dadamah at times, though also adding a little 4AD style ethereality ala This Mortal Coil and Dead Can Dance. As Montgomery plays in such a distinct and singular way, and because he's released so much this year already, Johnston's contributions are crucial, a gossamer touch that expands the emotional range of Rhymes of Chance - dark, sensual, otherly.
