Label: WRWTFWW
Genre: Japanese Ambient/Avant-Garde
Japan in the 80s was a near-endless well of remarkable innovation, and Midori Takada's position within that is as crucial as it comes. Originally released in '81, Mkwaju was her debut release and showcased a truly prodigious understanding of percussion and disparate musical forms/cultures. Fast forward nearly forty years and its kind of bizarre to think of this as anything other than contemporary - broad, progressive, inclusive. There's a fascination with Japanese music right now, but it's hard to be cynical of that when this is the reason why.
