Ahaha, he hath returned, the LORDGOD of Piss Take Concrète, Louis Johnstone, aka Wanda Group and, as here, A Large Sheet of Muscle. The previous record under this name, 2024’s Dracula Completo on Trilogy Tapes, was a big favourite around these parts, but still, from what I can tell at least, somewhat divisive in wider circles. You either get where Johnstone is calling from, or you’re wrong quite frankly, which is fine as long as you can live with that inconvenient truth. Chinese Benefits, whatever that might mean and perhaps it doesn’t matter anyhow, continues in a similar vein of blistered electronics, spoken word genius/absurdity/clickbait, environmental noise and indeterminable ‘other sound’ that confuse and enlighten in comparative measure. What is being got at here? Who can tell. But I’ll keep returning in spite of that challenge. I’m told the definition of madness, apparently, is to keep doing the same thing and hope for a different result. I don’t really know about that. But Johnstone might. He’s probably the only sane one left. ‘Drinking fizzy pop in a house party was always different in the early 2000s than it is now in 2029’. PREACH!
