More wild sounds from the Finnish underground courtesy of Jani Hirvonen's latest work under the Uton moniker, a blisteringly free-form smog of lesser-spotted wind and string instruments, mutilated electronics, field recordings and undefinable percussion that renders Hassell's fourth world in the nightmare vision of Wolf Eyes and no-wave anti-formalism. Hirvonen states that he can't recall much of where a lot of these sounds originally came from, which speaks clearly to the improvised, collage-based nature of his practice. Unusual Suggestions is precisely that, a very alien-sounding, palimpsestic arrangement that plays loose with conventional form but is deeply rich in odd texture and implacable frequencies. There's some obvious kinship with his fellow Scandi brothers and sisters currently in operation in and around Gothenburg, though you might also detect a punk-like iconoclasm that feels a little more US-derived, in line with the mutant slop of Skaters and Aaron Dilloway and the Hanson Records family. Extremely cooked psycho-sonics no doubt, though also strangely satisfying in its mangled, devil-may-care threat. The label are calling it a Gesamtskuntwerk, which in this instance mostly means we've an artist playing entirely to an audience of one. Total Art Damage.
