CD released via Antony Milton's Another Sunday label
Not much room for CDs amongst the WOE racks, but we make exception for Antony Milton's increasingly essential Another Sunday label and its generous documentation of NZ's underground hot bed. These two latest titles arrive courtesy of a few familiar names: Thee Righteous Yeah is Michael Morley and Sunset Temples counts Birchville Cat Motel's Campbell Kneale amongst its ranks, alongside Sarah Bingle and Elise Bishop. These guys are so prolific it's hard to keep track of all the action, though in this instance you'd certainly be missing out. Thee Righteous Yeah sees Morley, so it says, in ambient mode, which I wont dispute though will offer the caveat that all things are relevant. Another Sunday (Ghosts) is generally free of the foundation-shaking detonations of the Dead C, Gate et al, favouring drone over discordance, where 60 plus minutes (god bless the CD) of beautifully subtle guitar figures drift in and out of a undulating grey scale fog, something like Loren Connors trying to climb out of the depths of a K-Group monolith. Quite possibly Morley at his most beautiful (and still a little snaggle-toothed regardless). We can leave the foundation-shaking to Sunset Temples, who chip in with something a good deal more ferocious, a single 40 minute piece of warring guitar-bass-drum noise assault, Kneale tearing at the fabric of the universe for all he's worth while the desperate sounds rise around him. Another Sunday indeed, ripped from the weekend's indulgences and fearing the in-coming week. Has/should it be any other way?
