The lineage of the Bristol Sound extends a notch further with this debut from newcomers, Quade. New though their name may be to most, the four piece have apparently been working away at this seven song set for over three years now, collaborating with a few known heads in the local music community, gently soaking in the heritage of the city. It appears time well spent. Roughly speaking, Nacre finds some middle-ground between the dub-kraut orientations of certain derivations of trip-hop and someone like, say, BEAK>, and the what was loosely understood as the post-rock stylings of the Planet Records set (closer 'Technicolour' appears to owe particular debt to our beloved Movietone). As you might then expect, the emphasis is less upon conventional song structure and more on tone, texture, sound. Though they don't sound especially similar, it's this approach that earns some fair comparison with Tara Clerkin Trio, while their gothic-folk undertones recall aspects of both Caroline and, surprisingly, These New Puritans' career-high third LP. Early days for Quade for sure, but they're making nods in all the right directions and winding their own distinguishable desire lines as they go. Keen to see where it leads.
