Now, Mosquitoes are an act we've written about a lot here, and, we thought, something we'd done definitively given the WOE reissue of their second record required us to construct a bio of sorts. And yet, their new one for Belgian avant noise outpost Knotwilg does invite a secondary reading. Split into the two long form titular tracks, it's the A side in particular that shifts the trio into ever-confounding territory. They've often shown a somewhat flagrant disregard for structure, and Reverse Drift sees them double down on that intent, fusing the submerged vocal experimentations of Robert Ashley with the somehow complimentary spatial awareness of both musique concrete and dub. As with all the best Mosquitoes moments, the first listen is a head-spinner, the second, third and fourth++ the road to enlightenment. Reverse Charge is born of similar aims, but embraces the anti-rock dub aesthetics of previous records to a greater extent, and with it almost - ALMOST - finds a groove, before building to a climax of strung-out distortion that almost seems to mock rock convention. BLESSED! As ever, it's upside down music for upside down times, and another opportunity to spin yourself inside out again in a way that only Mosquitoes can. Still the best around.
