Sa Pa return hot on the heels of the killer The Fool 12" from March with his first long player for Short Span. Ambeesh feels closely tied to the sound of that four song collection, which makes it a surprise to learn that these tracks are actually somewhat archival in nature, originally conceived between 2014-2019 around the release of debut LP, Fuubutsushi. There's a great deal of sense in returning to them again now, recalling as they do the currently immensely popular Chain Reaction sound, along with a few gestures to early the Giegling output that seems increasingly crucial as time ticks by. Which means we're talking deeply spacious, cavernous dub techno that's a little blurred around the edges, the kind of between-the-rooms underwater ebb and flow ambience that the likes of Brian Leeds has also been exploring under various monikers (Huerco S, Loidis, Pendant) for the past decade or so, and Peak Oil has recently hit the zeitgeist with. The sound might now be a common one, but Sa Pa's contributions feel especially on point, gauzy and unhurried in a way that likely speaks most to their period of creation - there was no zeitgeist being chased when these were first imagined into being, which lends them an enticing ghostly otherness that seems a few steps above. Coincidental this should arrive the same week as that fated new Purelink LP finally decides to show it's face - they make perfect bedfellows.
