Double LP
Trilogy Tapes closed out another banner year with one of their very best, unting Mix Mup and Kassem Mosse for a densely packed debut LP that splits the difference between late 90s Detroit and mid-noughties Berlin - think Parrish turned out for Workshop and you might be halfway to the truth. The pair first came together all the way back in 2012, and it's remarkable how much sense their pairing makes over a decade on. The world has changed around them, but their free-ranging, lo-fi take on deep house, ambient, RnB samples and disjointed techno retains an inventive flair, compelling and playful, probing at the edges of convention and finding multiple crossover points. Too many highlights to list in full, but strong words reserved for the Villalobos like stomper 'What is MM/KM (i think i know)' at the centre and the jittering, strangely elegiac closer 'Vasen' that could be Actress on Ritalin. Not had this one off the stereo since it landed last minute in December. Suspect it'll have passed a few interested others by in the year-end rush, but there's still time to put right your infernal wrongs.
